about

Top Ranking formed in Montreal in 1983, inspired by the 2-Tone ska movement in the UK and the reggae roots it drew on. They packed dance floors in rooms like Foufs and Rising Sun with a high energy show and strong original material, but only ever recorded one single, a double-A of Life Is Not So Hard and Conquer in 1984. The line-up on this live recording is the same as on the 45, with the exception of Piccolo replacing Nigel Goddard on sax. As lineups changed, Top Ranking moved away from ska towards conscious roots reggae: this soundboard recording captures the band at their best, with one foot on the upbeat and the other on the down.

As well as the personnel on this recording, at various points between 1983-87 Top Ranking also included Nigel Goddard, Anthony Caron, Patrick Fischer (saxes) Jean Ruthemann, Paul Jankowski, Lee, Alan Taylor (drums) Robin, Patrick Sheehan (guitar) Roxanne Bolden (backing vocals and keys) and probably some others I'm forgetting (what was that rockabilly drummer's name, who played the first gig standing up?)

Recorded live at Foufounes Éléctriques, Montreal, December 1984
